Have you ever wondered what effects your monthly manicure has on your body? No…
Well you should! Unbeknownst to majority of the public, nail polish has been known to contain some extremely harmful ingredients.
For decades there has been a huge debate about the ingredients of polish and many misconceptions have been made. The main ingredient in nail polish is know as Tosylamide Formaldehyde Resin, this resin is made up of several substances including Formaldehyde gas. However this resin is completely different from Formaldehyde gas, it is thick and sticky and has different properties from Formaldehyde gas. Formaldehyde is a gas, not a liquid or a solid and if it were a product of nail polish it would escape rapidly, and it is not stable with moisture.
So why is it on the lable? In the early 1900′s Formaldehyde manufacturers began mixing this gas with water to create a liquid substance called “formalin”. They mistakenly assumed that the added Formaldehyde was dissolving in the water, so this is how formalin was sold. United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and many other countries require labeling with ingredient name listed in the INCI Dictionary (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). This dictionary repeated the original information by Formaldehyde manufacturers and required cosmetic manufacturers using formalin to put the name “formaldehyde” on product labels.
In saying all that, traces of Formaldehyde still reside within Formaldehyde resin. Whats Formaldehyde you ask… brace yourself! Formaldehyde is commonly used to preserve dead animals and humans! Gross! Imagine what that is doing to your nails, and don’t forget that the nails are porous just like the skin (soaks up anything!). So if you think about it, this toxic chemical, which is harmful to your body and is also a known carcinogen (cancer causing substance) is not just stopping at your nails, it is being absorbed into your body! No thanks! Even though there are debates about the amounts of Formaldehyde detectable within this Formaldehyde resin, I am not taking any chances!
Other harmful ingredients that are less known to the public include the following; Toluene, DBP (dibutyl phthalate), Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor. Here are some little facts about each.
+ Toluene: This makes your polish super smooth when applied to the nail, great right? No, unfortunately, inhaling high levels of toluene is said to be harmful to your nervous system, and can cause light-headedness and nausea! Ever wondered why you get a sudden head spin from walking into a nail bar? Or why your hubby constantly complains about your polish being so strong its giving him a headache? He isn’t lying girls!
+ DBP (dibutyl phthalate): This baby keeps your polish from chipping, which also sounds great, however its also been labeled a carcinogen (cancer causing substance) and can lead to birth defects!
+ Formaldehyde Resin: This makes the polish tough and resistant, however is a derivative from Formaldehyde, so be cautious!
+ Camphor: Camphor is a waxy, scented substance derived from the wood of the camphor tree or chemically manufactured, and it has been restricted in Canada. It can cause some minor side effects such as skin redness and irritation. Camphor is poisonous when ingested in large quantities.
